I'll say it again; even if you think your forest doesn't have a problem, it might still have one.
Pennsylvania now has two separate parts of the state with Emerald ash borer infestations. Up until now, they thought it was just found in the Western part of the state. With this announcement that the beetle is now also in Central Pennsylvania, the idea that even states with well staffed, up-to-date and alert groups on the lookout for pests have got all their infestations found is pretty much out the window. I happen to personally know that PA has a proactive and smart bunch of people looking for Emerald ash borer. But that means nothing in a state covered in dense tree cover!
Just because you think you are far from any infestations of tree killing invasive insects doesn't mean your trees are safe, or that it is OK to move firewood. There is no way to be 100% sure- it is just impossible. Better safe than sorry!
From the PA Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff's press release;
campers and homeowners are encouraged to use only locally harvested firewood, burn all of the firewood on-site, and not carry it to new locations.
Exactly!
