What is going on in Worcester is not unique, but it is a tragedy.
A letter in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette last Friday illustrated very well the effects that invasive tree pests have on communities. The couple that wrote in, George and Katherine Evans of Worcester, are rightfully upset at the loss of the trees in their neighborhood. Unfortunately, they also feel as though communication from the authorities has been lacking. I can't comment on that aspect, but I do know this- what is happening in their neighborhood is really a terrible loss, and one that could repeat itself if the public doesn't take the right actions and precautions.
It is hard to imagine that the government might come and cut down all the trees around your property, and harder yet to think that it is totally needed and for the best (in the long run). So I hope that the beetles don't spread, because nobody else should have to feel the loss and helplessness that the folks in Worcester must be experiencing. And as always, to help prevent the spread, tell everyone you know- regardless of where you live- never to move firewood.
