Black ash is the signature species of calcium-rich swamps that house dozens of unusual and rare plants, including some that are thought of as tropical, like orchids.

Here is one of these orchids, the beautiful, rare and fleeting small yellow lady’s slipper, so-named for its modified lower petal that resembles a slipper—if you suspend your disbelief as if watching a Hollywood blockbuster. Moving firewood around helps the emerald ash borer to move too—and threatens the habitat of this orchid.
