A torrential storm hit NYC last Wednesday, tearing down treasured mature trees in its wake. In a NYTimes article, each tree was identified by species and size; much like when a person passes away and we list their name and age. I think it is telling that these 33 trees are mourned in such an individual, specific way. In a city like New York, where things are always changing, moving, and probably pretty crazy, the large trees that literally rise above the fray are a very calming presence.

The power of this storm and the number of trees in New York City makes it quite impressive that so few actually toppled. Surely, if trees in NYC were riddled with invasive insects and fungi, the damages would have been far more serious. New York City already has one invasive tree pest (Asian Longhorned Beetle) that is poised to wreak havoc if not contained and eliminated; not moving firewood will help prevent the arrival of more pests in the future.
