One more big reason to buy firewood locally: Thousand cankers disease – a fungus spread by the walnut twig beetle.

So far this disease—of the ‘death by a thousand cuts’ variety—has only been found in black walnut trees in the western part of the US.

But worry is growing that black walnuts across the eastern US will be under serious threat if the disease spreads across the Plains.

And how does thousand cankers disease spread? You guessed it: People moving firewood, untreated wood and logs.

Check out this report produced by Iowa State University Extension Specialists—and don’t miss the great photos at the bottom.

Seems dangerous

I have never heard of this kind of disease before. It seems so dangerous, is it transmittable disease? I will not order anymore firewood out of my locality as prevention is better than cure. I think everyone should know about this thing, i will spread this message in my locality and refer them this site to know more about it. Really glad that i am able to know about this.
