The gold-spotted oak borer is a small beetle that kills healthy oak trees. Right now, in California, it is killing lots of oaks. There is nothing to suggest that the gold-spotted oak borer will disappear- so why, officials in San Diego county, are you telling people this confusing message:
"...and the public is urged not to transport firewood in and out of the county until more is known about the pest." (emphasis added)
I'm disappointed. The public should be urged not the move firewood, period. It isn't "until we learn more," it is a permanent change that we, as people that live in a mobile and increasingly invasive-species-ridden, environment, should take to heart.
So here is my message to Californians, and anyone else that ever uses firewood. Don't move it around. Buy it where you will burn it. Because even once "more is known about the pest" we will still not want anyone to move firewood!
