If it makes it to the Washington Post a day after the elections, it is probably pretty important!
As the Associate Press has told us this past week, and again today in the Washington Post, the Asian longhorn beetle outbreak in Massachusetts threatens New England’s forests. I’m glad that Massachusetts and federal officials will act to kill the beetles.
However, we need to remember how we can help. First, it is likely that the ALB is present but still unrecognized in many other places – so don’t move firewood! Second, keep your eyes open and report any unusual insects. Finally, visit continentalforestdialogue.org to see how you or an organiation you belong to can help persuade governments and businesses to adopt practices that will prevent future introductions or spread of damaging forest pests.
