New article on the Worcester Asian longhorned beetle outbreak talks about how diverse city trees could have mitigated the problem.

This past weekend's article on Worcester MA and the Asian longhorned beetle is a little depressing to me. It talks about how if Worcester had diversified its trees way back in 1986, when an overabundance of maples was discovered during an inventory, the problem might be a little less severe. And again, in 2006, a tree inventory failed to notice the bugs, which means that another opportunity was lost (in this case, early detection).

All of this points, in my mind, to the importance of people being responsible for their own actions. Not moving firewood, planting lots of different trees in your backyard, and even just asking questions about what you see in your city- all these things make a difference.
