The US government issued a pretty strict regulation [see press release here] last week to ensure that pests are not brought south of the Canada-USA border via firewood.
"a federal order, effective immediately, requiring heat treatment for shipments of all firewood made of hardwood species entering the United States from Canada."
The heat treatment will add expense to firewood, of course, but failing to prevent the unintentional movement of pests would have far greater potential costs.
